C4 photosynthesis is an advanced photosynthetic pathway that evolved as an adaptation to hot, dry environments. Unlike C3 photosynthesis where CO2 directly enters the Calvin cycle, C4 plants initially fix CO2 into a 4-carbon compound (oxaloacetate) using the enzyme PEP carboxylase. This pathway involves a spatial separation of initial CO2 fixation and the Calvin cycle, occurring in different cell types. The key advantage is that C4 plants can maintain high photosynthetic efficiency while keeping stomata partially closed, reducing water loss. This makes C4 plants particularly successful in arid and high-temperature environments. Examples include corn, sugarcane, and many grass species.
