Interview Question and Answer of MOSFET

Question-1. What is MOSFET?

Answer-1: MOSFET stands for Metal oxide Semiconductor field effect transistor. A type of transistor that is controlled by voltage rather than current. The power MOS field effect transistor (MOSFET) evolved from the MOS integrated circuit technology. It has extremely low input power levels and no inherent limitation to the switching speed.

Question-2. Explain the working of MOSFET?

Answer-2: MOSFET is a special type of field-effect transistor ( FET ) that works by electronically varying the width of a channel along which charge carriers flow. The wider the channel, the better the device conducts. The charge carriers enter the channel at the source , and exit via the drain . The width of the channel is controlled by the voltage on an electrode called the gate , which is located physically between the source and the drain and is insulated from the channel by an extremely thin layer of metal oxide.

Question-3. How many terminals the MOSFET consists of?

Answer-3: There are three terminals of MOSFET namely: Source, Drain and Gate.

Question-4. What do you mean by the Depletion mode and Enhancement mode in the MOSFET?

Answer-4:
Depletion mode: When the negative gate to source voltage is applied to N channel MOSFET, it is called as depletion mode of the MOSFET.
Enhancement mode: When the positive gate to source voltage is applied to N channel MOSFET, it is called as enhancement mode of the MOSFET.

Question-5. What are the main application of MOSFET?

Answer-5: There are some important applications of metal oxide semiconductor FET (MOSFET) are as given below:
MOSFET is used for switching and amplifying electronics signals in the electronic devices.
It is used as an inverter.
It can be used in digital circuit.
MOSFET can be used as a high frequency amplifier.
It can be used as a passive element e.g. resistor, capacitor and inductor.
It can be used in brushless DC motor drive.
It can be used in electronic DC relay.
It is used in switch mode power supply (SMPS).

Question-6. In which type of MOSFET, there is no physical channel?

Answer-6: Enhancement MOSFET

Question-7. write down advantages of MOSFET?

Answer-7: The MOSFET has certain advantages over the conventional junction FET, or JFET. Because the gate is insulated electrically from the channel, no current flows between the gate and the channel, no matter what the gate voltage (as long as it does not become so great that it causes physical breakdown of the metallic oxide layer). Thus, the MOSFET has practically infinite impedance . This makes MOSFETs useful for power amplifiers.

Question-8. In which region, the power dissipation is very high in the MOSFET?

Answer-8: Active region

Question-9. What are the three regions of operation of a MOS transistor?

Answer-9: The three regions of operation of a MOS transistor are Cut-off region, Non-saturated region and Saturated region.
Cut-off region: This is essentially the accumulation mode, where there is no effective flow of current between the source and drain.
Non-saturated region: This is the active, linear or week inversion region, where the drain current is dependent on both the gate and drain voltages.
Saturated region: This is the strong inversion region, where the drain current is independent of the drain-to-source voltage but depends on the gate voltage.

Question-10. The MOSFET switch in its on-state may be considered equivalent to?

Answer-10: Capacitor

Question-11. For operation of depletion type MOSFET, the gate voltage is kept?

Answer-11: Negative

Question-12. Give the main advantage of the Power MOSFET over other semi conductor devices?

Answer-12: The main advantages of the MOSFET are low input power and high switching speed.

Question-13. In a P-channel MoSFET the substrate is?

Answer-13: N-type

Question-14. What is the required connection for an enhancement type N-MOSFET to function as a resistor?

Answer-14: Gate should be connected to the drain.

Question-15. Explain whether the MOSFET is voltage controlled or current controlled device?

Answer-15: MOSFET is a Voltage controlled device. The MOSFET is a voltage controlled majority charge carrier device in the output current is controlled by the input voltage. The conduction of current in the n channel MOSFET is done only by electrons whereas the current conduction in the p channel is done by holes.

Question-16. What is main reason for switching delay in the MOSFET?

Answer-16: The main reason for switching delay is due to charging and discharging of input and output capacitors in the MOSFET.
